Humans will still be involved in the process – Facebook’s engineers will remove duplicate topics for example –
but the social network has emphasized that the new system is more “algorithmically driven” and has explicitly claimed that the new system will be less prone to political bias:
Earlier this year, we shared more
information about Trending in response to questions about alleged political bias in the product. We looked into these claims and found no evidence of systematic bias. Still, making these changes to the product allows our team to make fewer individual decisions about topics. Facebook is a platform for all ideas, and we’re committed to maintaining Trending as a way for people to access a breadth of ideas and commentary about a variety of topics.
Immediately can be seen by comparing the old and new trends in the news headlines, the new system also looks very similar to Twitter's list of trending hashtags.
Facebook changes and cannot guarantee that the system of political bias, of course. The company's engineers will still remove a hot topic as "non-newsworthy" (Facebook using #food as an example of this), and in view of the progress of technical workers, the algorithm may be designed, is biased--inadvertent or otherwise--not included in the system is no guarantee.
Trend focus for Facebook obscures the larger issue: punishment and prejudice in the suspension system. While social networks are usually recover quickly to be incorrectly suspended account, its record of suspicious suspension of high profile conservative and progressive critics Twitter easier.
Many of these users and the pages restored following coverage from Breitbart and other media, but its initial, inexplicable stops questioning continued bias in the company. Earlier this month, a group of popular comedy staged against Facebook's track record of review.
Don't like Twitter,Facebook at least to deal with claims, it is politically biased. But it remains to be seen if the changes and trends of news will give unbiased by their user experience.
